Death From Above 1979 Riot at SXSW

Big talk of SXSW and Coachella this year is the DFA 1979 comeback… Above shows some footage that captures the excitement of the comeback…. Or Does it?

For DFA cultists I feel like these guys could have done better Carles from HRO summed it up best

“It sorta reminds me of Woodstock 99, except no1 died and they handled it appropriately.”

Check out after the jump for more footage of the actual show

THE WEEKND – HOUSE OF BALLOONS

“I always want you when I’m coming down…”

Continuing with the “support local music” theme, last night the mysterious Toronto R&B group/person The Weeknd released the mixtape ‘House of Balloons.’ This release has been hyped beyond belief and I’m sure most of you know that Drake seems to have some involvement or at least has shown an enormous amount of support for the project. Nonetheless, I have listened straight through about 5 times at this point, and I can safely say this is my favorite piece of music to come out in 2011 thus far. The eery rawness of the singer’s words and incredible production have left me captivated while slightly disturbed.

SCREAM! – STRAVA

Its been a little while since I’ve posted an original so here’s a new track. Some of you have probably heard it at a live show of mine already. On that note I wanna thank anyone who came out on the weekend that Dante Leon and I played 1234 and Blue Dog together. The EP is in the works and will be ready soon, but until then here is a track for you guys to enjoy. Let me know what you think.

SebastiAn – Embody directed by So-ME

Say whatever you want about the the new Justice, MSTRKRFT but I don’t think anyone is denying that SebastiAn’s new album Total out is going to be a hit. He just released the music video for his first single Embody and it sounds and looks awesome. The video is directed by So-Me and he certainyl does the song justice.

Dante Leon

Until Drake all I could think of when it came to Toronto hip hop was underground… Now you’d think the door would have been opened to more accessible hip hop coming out of the north. But the screw faced city never seems to be able to pick up any positive momentum when someone makes it big.

Dante is the first guy since Drake who I feel could do it big. Cool sounding voice, interesting hooks. Can’t wait to see what he does with that one huge beat.

Might come out of this project with Saintwoods writer Strava.

GESAFFELSTEIN – THE VOICE

Those of you who like Techno should probably get familiar with Gesaffelstein. He put out an EP entitled “Variations” in late 2010 and was recently featured on the new Ed Banger compilation “Let the Children Techno”. He ranges from really heavy Acid Techno to more mellow productions that are closer to Tech House. For those of you who love classic techno, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this.

Here’s 2 of his tracks to get you guys started.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day!

(photo is when I dragged my gf up to the top of Crough Patrick mountain in Ireland, where St Paddy banished the snakes)

Ahhh St. Paddys day… By far the best holiday of the year.  A holiday completely devoted to drinking.  Here’s an old track of me and my brothers named after Irelands legendary hero Cu Chulain

CHULAIN – LOVE THY BROTHER by LOVE THY BROTHER

RECENT ROUNDUP

In the past month or two there have been some highly anticipated releases from a couple of my favourite bands: Radiohead’s ‘King of Limbs’ and The Strokes’ ‘Angles’.  I now have both, and although they have both given me an opportunity to reminisce, neither struck me in the same way that the bands’ earlier releases had.  Maybe my musical tastes have changed because I used to listen to these bands almost exclusively at different times in my life.  Not to say these releases were bad, but they haven’t been getting extreme amounts of play in my itunes.

For the past year I have found myself listening to a greater diversity of artists centered more around music blogs.  So now even with legendary albums coming out  when I look at my itunes most played and there is little consistency across the artist column.  I remember a few years ago I would be browsing an i-pod and I would consider people to be ‘entry level’ music fans if they had a lot of different artists and only one or two songs by each.  This was back in the day when limewire and other horrible programs would frequently have misspellings and mis-labelling of tracks.  My favorite example of this was how almost every reggae song ever made seeemd to be auto labelled under Bob Marley.

So maybe my tastes have changed or maybe it’s the scene that’s changed.  Now when I look at what I’ve been listening to most it’s not based on the obsession of artists but rather on an obsession with certain songs or sounds.  Really all you have to do is find a few blogs you love and learn how to sort through (at varying degrees of precision) what they post.  It’s almost overwhelming to be able to find ten great new tracks everyday.

While it weighs on me less and less all the time, I have always had a heavy conscience to not exclusively listen to electronic music.  I’m not really sure why, but I always try to have periodic gasps for air out of the always inspiring and addictive ocean of EDM music.  But this gets harder as more awesome dance music comes out and more disappointing non-dance music is put out.

Here’s what I’ve been listening to:

Justice: Civilization and New Album.

THE BEATING OF A MILLION DRUMS

THE FIRE OF A MILLION GUNS
THE MOTHER OF A MILLION SONS

“CIVILIZATION”

First single of Justice’s upcoming album 04-04-11.

This is what was just posted on the Justice facebook group a couple hours ago so its safe to say that after years of rumour and innuendo we’ve got a real hard date for new Justice music.  And on the Ed Banger facebook group they have confirmed it will be the first single off their new album.

There’s also word that Civilization” will soundtrack a new Adidas campaign directed by Romain Gavras, the director behind Justice’s “Stress” and M.I.A.’s “Born Free” videos.

And check out Multifaceted Parisian creative agency and brand Surface to Air new artwork above… The brand also designed those sweet Justice leather jackets and should be closely tied in with the album concept… Pretty Epic looking!!

I am getting Excited.
