Summer is here and that mean’s Festival Season has begun. We’ve broken down all the best ones into four categories: Hippy/Artist, Rock/Metal, Backstage Hipster and Rave. We’ve also put together this handy style shoot to better illustrate the best festivals for summer 2010 in Toronto and Montreal.

Ok so I know this a bit local but piknic Electronik is one of the sickest parties I’ve ever been to and deserves a spot on the main page.  Its massive outdoor rave that happens every sunday in a bautiful park on the water in Montreal under a massive art installation….. They’ve hosted everyone from baassnectar to mstrkrft.  Up until this year you could even bring your own booze in…. Now you still can you just need to accompany it with a real piknic…. which we all did last weekend!

last weekend was  especially cool because as they  teemed up with mutek another music festival and key component to Montreal’s absolutely epic electronic scene.

Headling was Paul Kalkbrenner who did an incredible job along with everyone else.  Also the movie the movie Berlin Calling, with Paul Kalkbrenner, is being  presented at the Montreal Goethe Institute (418 Sherbrooke E. St.) Tonight was the last night to check that out but hopefully a few of you guys caught that…. The movie stars the DJ and explores the udnerground Berlin music scene

This weekend will be absolutely incredible again for Grand Prix as the secretsundaze DJs and stars of the famous outdoor party circuit invade the Piknic….Check out the line-up and more info about the Djs after the jump!

secretsundaze

secretsundaze is the brainchild of residents and promoters Giles Smith and James Priestley. Starting life in the summer of 2002 it took a healthy dose of inspiration from outdoor parties in Ibiza where the pair had been going for many years. In a very short space of time it became the talk of London amongst the media and clued up party people alike. Taking daytime partying to a new level with its uncompromising music policy, use of quirky, original venues often with outdoor areas.  secretsundaze have hosted some of the most colourful parties that London has witnessed in the last decade.

Vincent Lamiuex

Vincent Lemieux is a man who wears many different hats: curator, label owner, DJ, producer, taste-maker. Internationally, Vince is probably best known as one of the curators behind Montreal’s MUTEK Festival. As label owner of Musique Risquée, which he started with Akufen’s Marc Leclair, Lemieux is also responsible for fostering local and international talent. The label has released work by Akufen, The Mole, Guillaume & the Coutu-Dumonts, and others.

OstrichCA

In 2003 when Montreal-based artist Ostrich (aka Nadir Agha) began exploring his talents as a DJ, producer, and aspiring filmmaker. His sound carries various funk-flavored elements of techno that is bound by deep house, categorizing itself as deep tech-house. In 2009, Ostrich signed to Tiefschwarz’s digital imprint, Souvenir Plus. The single “Haute Couture” garnered play by Richie Hawtin and Seth Troxler, and John Digweed featured it on his Transitions radio show. Nadir also co-runs a digital non-profit label, Buy You Sell Me.

Giles Smith

Named “Best New DJ” in 2003 by Time Out magazine, Giles Smith has played many of the UK’s most respected parties and venues.  Musically his style is focussed around Deep House and Techno with a warm, hypnotic feel. However his sets draw on many styles from Chicago to Detroit to more modern European influences. Most of all though, Giles’ sets are noted for their strong programming, passion integrity and his unwavering ability to uncover hidden gems both new and old.  He has also mixed and compiled two critically acclaimed mix CD’s for secretsundaze alongside his co-resident James Priestley.

James Priestley

As one-half of London’s popular secretsundaze crew, James Priestley has a distinct DJing style, playing broadly what you would describe as deep House & Techno, often borrowing from his freestyle background, preferring to move things around rather than follow one linear groove. You will also notice James’ solid musical background in his sets and productions usually favouring strong melodies and warm, organic sounds. His style hasn’t gone unnoticed and he regularly plays some of the best clubs and parties around the world.
