SAINTWOODS.COM INTERVIEW WITH DESIGNER DRUGS
Designer Drugs have arguably one of the best names in dance music, and back up this killer moniker with quality track after quality track. The pair, now based out of New York, have an impressive resume of remixes, which includes the likes of the Veronicas, Little Boots, and most recently an irresistible reworking of Annie’s Anthonio. Most recently they have put out the massive dance floor destroying “Riot/Drop Down EP” released on iheartcomix.
In support of their new EP, Designer Drugs will be joining Saintwoods.com for a night of mayhem and debauchery, at the S.A.T. in Montreal. In anticipation of what promises to be an reckless night at the SAT, we sat down with Theo and Michael of Designer Drugs discussing everything from their origins as a group to their current “Empire State of Mind.”
SW: How exactly did the two of you meet, and start up Designer Drugs?
T: Michael called me up to eat some special K cereal with him and It was love at first sight. We went to neighboring high schools and started producing on a Roland JX-305 and fruity loops 2.0; from drum n bass to electro.
SW: Theo’s balancing DJing and medschool…. How the hell do you manage that? Can we expect some real designer drugs in the future?
T: I miss most of the gigs and study instead, or study on the planes.
M: By studying he means drinking.
SW: You talked about your new album having some R&B vocals, some hip-hop vocals, some rock vocals. How is this going to work/fit in with your signature sound? It sounds pretty eclectic.
T: We’re not exactly sure how it will fit, just hoping it will.
M: We use the voice as an instrument and our style is based off music not sounds, so as long as the music is right the vocals should work out well.
SW: I hear you guys had a Zepelin shark type story except this one involved pizza and theo’s nether-regions…. Care to elaborate?
T: no clue?
M: hahahaha Zepelin definitely stepped it up for that one.
SW: You guys are signed to the label side of one of my favorite blogs out there, Iheartcomix, what do you think of the role that blogs now play in music, especially dance music?
T: They’re an effective/inexpensive way to get your music out there, especially for new up-and-coming artists.
M: I think you can find some music on blogs that labels would never put out. I think you can find more esoteric niche stuff to taylor to your specifics tastes if you find a blog that curates to those tastes.
SW: How often do you guys frequent music blogs, if at all?
T: Almost every day.
M: He didn’t say porn sites.
SW: Two of the biggest tracks in my library right now are Drop Down and Riot!, both new original tracks. Will you guys be focusing more on original tracks (as opposed to remixes), in the near future?
T- Most definitely.
M- We have a ton of originals lined up just mixing them down and recording some final parts. Soon there will be a lot more original material. I think the initial transition will be tough but I think we feel comfortable and natural about our original material now.
SW: You guys recently moved to NYC… Has an empire state of mind affected your music at all?
T: We’re more inspired to write better music I think.
M: It’s definitely inspiring and if you don’t succeed here you’ll end up broke so there is no choice. Make it or leave.
