When our good friend Yo-Ev of Torro Torro asked if I wanted to interview DJ Sega, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. Admittedly I’m no expert on the Baltimore and Philly Club scenes, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the sound and energy that they bring. DJ Sega, is at the forefront of the Philly club scene, with his incredibly creative production style. I’ve heard Sega masterfully sample everything from Papa Roach and Nirvana to Taylor Swift and Family Guy. I’ve heard amazing things about his DJ sets, which apparently match the intensity and originality of his production. Everyone in Toronto should make sure to check him out alongside our good friends Torro Torro this Friday, February 19th at Eddie’s 860 B College St. West. Check out the Facebook event for more info, now here’s the interview.

1) Hey Sega, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. So how did you first get into DJing and producing, and has your focus always been Baltimore Club?

I first started producing as a hobby and an outlet. I ended up getting a production program for free and started messing around wit it. I had a b-more club addiction that was going unfed at the time, so I started to make my own club for me to listen to. Years later, I started DJing for the kids at the skating rink. I guess it got to the point where I realized there’s no better DJ to play my music other than myself.

2) Last year you went on tour with Buruka Som Sistema, and played at a number of cities across the US and Canada. How was the Baltimore sound received overall, and more specifically in Canada?

Well, first and foremost…I make Philly Club. I’m from Philly, and my surroundings take me outside of the “B-more” rules of club music. When I play, I usually play 100% my productions. I’ve made so many tracks to the point where I can play almost any vibe of club set anywhere. I never really have a set playlist when I play live. I just figure out what the first song should be and I go from there. As far as the feedback I’ve been getting on my club music, it’s been surreal. And Canada actually catches on way quicker than the States. From the first time I toured up there with Rye Rye, up until now, I’m pretty sure the way Canadians go off to my music has progressed rapidly. My first time in Ottawa almost two years ago was a mind-blowing experience. It turned into a real rock concert!!! With shirts off, crowd-surfing, and mosh pits!!! I love every single time I do a show up there.

3) Could you talk briefly about how you got hooked up with Diplo and the Mad Decent crew?

I met somebody who knew Diplo while I was trying to sell my mixtapes in a record store. We had both Diplo and Switch come down to the skating rink to check out the teen scene I had going on. From then on ideas started to generate from me doing a video podcast to releasing productions for Hollertronix 8. From there it’s been me against the world of music.

4) I finally got the chance to listen to New Jack Philly, earlier in the month, and its been on repeat ever since. Any plans for more full-length releases?

I always have a lot of projects going on at once. As far as full-length releases, I have approximately 10 projects in mind and in progress. I’m going to put together a comedy-club album, a TV themed-club album, and a R&B-club album; to mention a few. But I’m going to be more focused on releasing more EPs.

5) Who are some of your favorite artists at the moment?

Me, myself, and DJ Sega. James Brown and Michael Jackson are gone. To me there is nobody else. But if I had to mention some artists’ music, it’d be some Kindred, Jill Scott, Guy, Dethklok, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Ludacris, Beanie Sigel, MC Hammer, Ice Cube, Jade, Anita Baker, Lords Of The Underground, Scores from movies…I listen to a lot of different music from a lot of different artists.

6) What’s can we expect from DJ Sega in 2010?

I don’t know, I surprise myself a lot; which I’m guessing is a very good thing. Hopefully more appearances, more tours, more releases, and more performances!!!!! Just stay focused!!!!
